Women key to growth & change

While researching women’s and girl’s empowerment groups around the world, we came across an article about the crucial role of women to effect change in their community, specifically in Nigeria. Below are the first two paragraphs from this article, posted in AfricaFiles:

Women empowerment – pivot for national growth

Analysts believe that Nigeria, with around 140 million citizens, and a huge population of women, has the potential to transmute from a poverty-stricken nation to a vibrant economy; through adequate empowerment of women. Various organisations support this viewpoint. Abimbola Akosile met the Executive Director of Awesome Treasures Foundation (ATF), Mrs. Olajumoke Adenowo, who is actively involved in the empowerment process; and writes on a remarkable input to a vital national process

Saving a country

Women in Nigeria are crucial, beyond certain customary duties and procreation efforts. They have the potential to turn an ailing economy around, at the family, local, state or national levels, through their in-bred economic strength, organisational skills, and single-minded focus to surmount obstacles posed by their environment, culture, and ‘stronger’ partners, the men. There is no gainsaying the fact that not all women are adequately positioned to ensure optimal output from their environment, but there is no denying the fact that most women who successfully attain positions of power in the society, put in more effort than men to ensure a better life for the good of all. Be it a bicycle-riding matriarch in the rural reaches of Edo State, or a melon-shelling mother in the remote corners of the South West, the over-riding focus is on how to contribute their quota to a needy development process.

Nothing really changes: Why make an activist film?

We just heard from a legendary international sales agent, who viewed the fine cut of The Naked Option. Honest words we appreciate:

“These films must be made and must continue to be made, we are however in a big dip regarding broadcast interest…the audience does not want to see them anymore because nothing really changes…( same with the Middle East…) a few years there was a very good film on Darfur ( amidst a dozen films on Darfur) the one that sold was the Oscar nominated one…that’s how it works”

But he believes in the film and will help with international festivals.

Meanwhile, we’re not discouraged in the slightest. We’ll reach out to the grassroots audience, which is where real change takes place, in any case.

Our focus and the point of The Naked Option is taking power, not sitting idly by as your livelihood is destroyed, your home made uninhabitable. Even small steps forward are steps forward.

You can sit on your hands saying nothing changes. In which case nothing will.

Or you can go out and start talking to people and taking action. Like the women of the Niger Delta.

1 day to go

There’s something particularly squirrel-y about this site. Maybe because we migrated over from a different platform.

E.g., I’ve had code just plain disappear after being saved. What’s that about?

In between banging my head against the wall, I’ve been spending some time tweeting, also researching potential partners. Prancing between excitement, that there are a number of organizations which sound like they’re doing awesome work, focused on different needs of women around the world, and disbelief, that ten years into the new millennium, we still need hundreds of organizations focused on women’s needs.

In case I wasn’t clear on that, last week I heard a report on NPR about a class action suit filed against Wal-Mart, on behalf of about one million female employees. For sexism. An instance they cited: a female employee asked why her colleague received a raise and she didn’t. Her supervisor told her, “He has a family.” She replied, “I’m a single mother.” He responded, “Show me a budget.” So she did, and received a raise, but not as much as her male colleague.

Yes, I’m dumbfounded.

Slowly but surely

Websites always take longer than planned. Is that a truism?

However, our go-live date is Dec. 15. And I’m optimistic we’ll make it. But not above a virtual crossing of the fingers. :}
